Rich Traditions and Cherished Values
Danish settlers came to West Denmark over 130 years ago. Immediately after their arrival they began to support each other, to establish a social network and to acknowledge their relationship with God. The result of these meetings was the establishment of West Denmark Lutheran Church. Their spiritual zeal lead them to purchase the plot of land where the first church was built and where the church continues today. Nearly fifteen acres of beautiful land on the western shore of Little Butternut Lake is where the community gathers to worship, study and play.
Many of the early inhabitants were admirers of a Danish pastor named N.S.F. Grundtvig. He was a controversial spiritual leader, historian, poet and politician in Denmark who wrote extensively about finding God in nature, enjoying creation through simple pleasures and education as a way to improve our God given life. The West Denmark community has changed over the past 130 years. The church is no longer exclusively "Danish" and no longer purely Lutheran. We now consider ourselves a "diverse" community consisting of many ethnic and religious backgrounds. West Denmark has strived to maintain the traditions that promote the values the ancestors brought with them but encourage new traditions from our multi-cultural world.
